Mercedes heads into 2026 under new regulations, hoping to return to the top. With the new emphasis on aero efficiency and energy management, the opportunity is clear – but so is the margin for error.
Finishing P2 in 2025, they proved consistent and close enough to taste a title fight with McLaren. This year, however, they seem quietly confident for the coming season, looking to capture their 9th Constructors’ Championship.

2026 Mercedes drivers
George Russell
Russell enters his eighth season in Formula 1 and his fifth with Mercedes, firmly established as the team’s lead driver. After finishing P4 in the 2025 Drivers’ Championship, he delivered consistent results and outscored teammate Kimi Antonelli by a significant margin.
Now heading into a regulation reset, Russell carries both stability and expectation. With Mercedes aiming to capitalize on the new era, 2026 presents the clearest opportunity yet to mount a sustained challenge for the Drivers’ Championship.
Kimi Antonelli
As one of the youngest drivers on the grid, the 19-year-old looks to continue to improve in his second season with the Brackley-based team. Having scored 150 points in his season debut, he finished a respectable P7, having one of the highest rookie points-scoring totals in F1 history. He is followed by another Mercedes legend who went on to score 109 with McLaren in his rookie season.
Mercedes technical breakdown
Early chatter surrounding the W17 has centred on Mercedes’ distinct front-wing concept, particularly the mounting structure and element configuration under the new aerodynamic framework. Power units also saw new changes as the move to 50% internal combustion and 50% electcial power, using advanced sustainable fuels.
Mercedes has, for many years, built exceptional power units, and anything but a dominant engine could be seen as a failure. With testing in Barcelona completed, the team suggested they were happy with the initial running on track, and overall, things were relatively smooth with no major surprises.
Mercedes leadership and personnel changes
Continuity continues with Toto Wolff remaining Team Principal in his 13th year. James Allison also remains technical lead, having switched to Mercedes back in 2017 from Ferrari. Alongside Allison, Simone Resta continues into his 2nd season as deputy technical lead, having left Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season.
Off track, Wolff sold part of his stake in the team to CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz, who joined as co-owner and strategic advisor, while Toto retains full operational control in his continued role as Team Principal.
2026 Mercedes performance expectations
With the reset in regulations, Mercedes heads into 2026 as genuine title contenders. After finishing P2 in 2025, they proved they are close enough to the front to capitalize on any advantage the new era presents.
Early running in Barcelona showed positive signs, and while testing rarely tells the full story, the team appears well prepared. If their concept translates into race performance, this could be the opportunity to return to the top.
Key questions for Mercedes going into the 2026 F1 season
- Did Mercedes nail the active aero and energy deployment, or is this another clever concept waiting to meet reality?
- After Barcelona testing, the new package appeared stable and well integrated, with encouraging signs around energy management. The real test will be whether that stability holds over a full race weekend — and how it compares to the rest of the field.
2. Can Antonelli take the next step from impressive rookie to consistent podium finisher?
With Russell a consistent threat at the front, Antonelli’s performance will be critical in the team’s pursuit of another championship. Adapting quickly to the new car while delivering consistent qualifying performances and regular podium finishes is essential. If he makes that leap, Mercedes becomes a genuine two-car threat. If not, the championship fight could quickly become a one-driver effort.
What does 2026 hold for Mercedes?
Mercedes steps into a new era with stability – but also expectation. They enter the season with consistent and stable leadership and driver pairing. The new regulation should favour a team like Mercedes built around technical discipline and system cohesion. If the W17’s systems are as refined as early signs suggest, and if Antonelli continues his upward trajectory alongside a fully established Russell, Mercedes have everything required to fight at the front from race one.
2026 won’t be about rediscovering dominance. It will be about whether Mercedes can turn preparation into precision when the margins shrink.
