Antonelli has been killing the 2026 season so far, becoming the youngest Formula One driver to win the Chinese Grand Prix. Unfortunately, winning comes with its drawbacks. Some are comparing the young driver with F1 legend Ayrton Senna. Others compare him to former-F1 driver Nyck De Vries.
Senna’s Career
Just like most Formula One drivers, Senna started with karting. In 1983, he won the Formula Three championship, and skipped Formula Two – heading straight into Formula One for the 1984–85 season. Ayrton Senna was twenty-four years old when he made his Formula One debut. He went on to spend three years fighting hard and won the championship in his fourth year with McLaren-Honda. After that, Senna went on to win two more championships during the following two years.
He made his switch to Williams-Renault for the 1994 season, the season in which he would crash and unfortunately pass away at the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy. Senna is now known as an F1 great. He is recognized for his wet-weather performances and his six wins at the Monaco Grand Prix, which to this day remain unmatched.
De Vries’ Career
Nyck De Vries had a fairly successful career leading up to Formula One. he had numerous karting titles, won Formula Two in his second year, and won in Formula E. In 2023, De Vries was promoted to Formula One with the AlphaTauri Formula One team. However, his performance dropped drastically. Over ten races, his best finish was 12th place with two DNFs, leaving no points to his name.
Nyck De Vries was dropped from AlphaTauri not halfway through his maiden season and was replaced by fan-favourite Daniel Ricciardo.
Antonelli’s Career
Kimi Antonelli started karting in 2014 at eight years old. Four years later, he was signed to the Mercedes Junior Programme and went on to win four titles. Antonelli moved into Italian Formula four in 2021. The younger driver then moved to the Formula Regional European Championship and won the title in 2023. From there, he was fast-tracked and put into Formula two for the 2024–25 season.
In 2025, Kimi was promoted to Formula One. He took seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton’s silver arrow seat and finished just six points behind Hamilton.
So, which is it?
While it is way too early to confidently say that Andrea Kimi Antonelli is on the same level as Senna, he shows potential. Kimi has everything he needs to put himself into contention and begin to be compared to Senna. I would argue that he is not another De Vries, as Antonelli continues to prove time and time again that he is worthy of the second Mercedes seat, whereas De Vries did not last a season.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli may never be the next Senna, Schumacher, or Hamilton. But he will always be Kimi Antonelli, a name that will make history books.
